SHARE Expert Webinar 'Best practice and successful approaches in pre-departure Cultural Orientation' - Thursday 28 May 2015 (14.30-16.00)

ICMC, IOM and the Swedish municipality of Strömsund are delighted to invite your participation in the SHARE Expert Webinar 'Building the basis for integration: best practice and successful approaches in pre-departure Cultural Orientation'.

Co-organised by ICMC and IOM in the framework of the SHARE Network, and taking place on Thursday 28th May from 14.30-16.00, the webinar will draw on the experiences of field experts from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and practitioners working on pre-departure and reception for resettled young people and their families in the Swedish municipality of Strömsund, to explore successful current approaches to pre-departure Cultural Orientation in European resettlement and admission programmes.  This webinar is the second in the SHARE Expert Webinar series - follow the link to watch a recording of the first webinar on 'Recognising & Responding to Trauma Amongst Refugee Populations'.

Why a SHARE webinar on pre-departure Cultural Orientation?

In anticipation of a refugee moving to a resettlement country, basic information and advice on the journey and life ahead is of paramount importance.  Pre-departure cultural orientation programmes and information can prepare refugees by providing practical information on the country of resettlement, and assist refugees in setting realistic goals and developing the skills needed to succeed in their new environment.

Answering the questions that refugees may have before entering this new stage of their life and reinforcing information received pre-departure after refugees arrive can help to reduce anxiety and avoid disappointment.  Pre-departure cultural orientation programmes and information therefore benefit both the refugees as well as the receiving communities and authorities.  At a time when European countries have extended protection to over 30,000 refugees from Syria, both by extending existing resettlement quotas and establishing new resettlement and admission programmes, adequately preparing refugees and receiving communities for arrival is more crucial than ever.

Who can participate in the webinar?

The SHARE Expert Webinar can facilitate attendance for up to 25 participants, and is open to anyone working on or with an interest in refugee protection, resettlement and integration in Europe.  To register your interest in attending, please complete the SHARE Expert Webinar Participant Expression of Interest form by 5pm on Thursday 21st May 2015.  Given the limited number of webinar places available, a final participant selection will be made based the information you provide in your expression of interest and achieving as wide a range of participants as possible.
