'A City Says Yes!' Reflections on the experiences of the Save Me campaign to promote refugee resettlement in Germany'

On May 8th 2013, in the framework of the SHARE Project, ICMC Europe and PRO ASYL together launched the joint publication 'A City Says Yes! Reflections on the experiences of the Save Me campaign to promote refugee resettlement in Germany'

The publication captures the successful tools and approaches of the German 'Save Me' campaign for cities and refugee resettlement, a grassroots, city-based initiative begun in Munich in 2008 and now with branches in over 50 German cities and towns.  Save Me lobbies local political authorities to show their support for resettlement, recruits local people as volunteers and mentors to support resettled refugees afer they arrive, and works to raise awareness of refugee resettlement and improve integration conditions.  4 years after the campaign began, Save Me had achieved just under 60 formal City Council decisions in favour of refugee resettlement and received over 7000 registrations from local citizens wishing to act as volunteers and mentors.

'A City Says Yes!' highlights the successes of Save Me  - in contributing to the adoption of a resettlement programme in Germany in partnership with UNHCR, in building alliances and partnerships in support of resettlement  at the local level including political authorities, civil society organisations and local citizens, and in creating a new 'culture of welcome' within German society.  It also highlights the role of Save Me in inspiring coalition of European NGOs and international organisations to launch the  ‘Resettlement Saves Lives’ campaign, advocating for Europe to provide significantly more places for resettled refugees each year.

The publication was launched at 'A City Says Yes!' Welcoming resettled refugees in Europe,’ a half-day event co-organised and hosted by ICMC together with the Committee of the Regions.  The event, chaired by the Mayor of Lisbon Mr. Antonio Costa, explored the role of local and regional authorities and their civil society partners in mobilising support for refugee resettlement amongst citizens, and influencing resettlement and integration policy at national and European levels.
